  1. Court Interpreter Program (Hybrid)

OVERVIEW

This 9 to 12 month program will provide the student with the legal terminology and interpreting skills required to work as a court interpreter in the public and private sector.  This program will prepare students for the state of California Court Interpreter exam. The following 4 courses must be successfully completed with a grade of 70% or better to receive a Certificate of Completion in the Court Interpreter Program (Hybrid). Total charge for the program is $2,360.

Written test prep – $590.00

Pre-requisite: Students should have a high school diploma or equivalent and demonstrate bilingual ability by submitting an audio tape of introducing him/herself in Korean and English.

The student will learn the Interpreter’s Code of Ethics and English vocabulary and idioms to pass the written test to become a court certified interpreter.  This course consists of 20 hours of instruction and quizzes.

Consecutive Techniques and Criminal Terminology – $590.00

The student will learn consecutive techniques such as retention, note-taking and dealing with objections. 5 Consecutive Lessons will be covered by watching a video and interpreting famous trials from Korean to English and from English to Korean. This course consists of 20 hours of instruction, quizzes, and one final exam.

Sight Translation for Court Interpreters – $590.00

The student will read various criminal court documents related to theft, disorderly conduct, drug abuse, fraud and DUI from English to Korean and from Korean to English. The student is required to submit a written translation before the class, which will be edited, evaluated and returned.  This course consists of 20 hours of instruction.

Simultaneous interpreting in the Criminal Court – $590.00

This course will discuss the tactics to pass the state court interpreter test by becoming fluent in simultaneous interpreting.  We will do shadowing, gradually expanding the retention scope.  Then the student will learn to catch up each unit of meaning in English and connecting them in Korean in the way the listen can easily comprehend.  It is recommended that the student practice simultaneous interpreting at least 20 minutes a day.  The course consists of 20 hours of instruction and practice.

 

 

  1. COURT INTERPRETER PROGRAM (ONLINE)

COURSE OVERVIEW

This 9 to 12 month program is intended to provide the student with the legal terminology and interpreting skills required to work as a state court interpreter. The following 4 courses must be successfully completed with a grade of 70% or better to receive a Certificate of Completion in the Court Interpreter Program. Total charge for the program is $2,360.

Court Interpreting I – $590.00

Pre-requisite: Students should have high school diploma or equivalent, submit a bilingual tape of introducing him/herself and pass with at least 60% score.

This course introduces the general criminal terminology in Korean and English used in criminal court, covering criminal court proceedings starting from arrest to arraignments, pre-trial hearings, preliminary hearings, and trials. The student will be introduced basic technics of note-taking and retention for consecutive interpreting, and then practice 5 consecutive lessons of: Murder, Burglary, Carjacking, and Money laundering and murder suspect.

Basic theories of sight translation will be covered such as analysis of structure and syntax.  3 sight translation will be practiced: misdemeanor plea form, fraud, and a letter from the attorney general.  Students will learn the basic theory of simultaneous interpreting, such as shadowing and unit of meaning, and practice 1 simultaneous interpreting of 120 wpm.

This course consists of 20 hours of instruction, and the students will be evaluated based on  quizzes and class participation.

 

Court Interpreting II – $590.00

This is a continuation of the Court Interpreting I course.   It will continue the review of criminal terminology and discuss the Interpreter’s Code of Ethics. The student will practice 4 Consecutive lessons on: corporal punishment, drug dealers, vandalism, and murder defendant. Sight translation covers police report, TRO court order form, embezzlement and domestic violence. Simultaneous interpreting of Assault and Battery, and Murder will be practiced. This course consists of 20 hours of instruction.

Court Interpreting III – $590.00

This course continues the review of criminal terminology.  Emphasis will be given on Korean to English and English to Korean sight translations as the student will practice: A letter to judge, Police Report, mayhem, Rape and drug possession.  This course consists of 20 hours of instruction.  1 simultaneous lesson on disorderly conduct and 2 consecutive lessons on domestic violence and carjacking will be covered.

Advanced Court Interpreting – $590.00

This course consists of 4 mock examinations similar to the format and level of difficulty of the Judicial Council Examination for Court Interpreters. There will be 4 consecutive interpreting, 4 sight translation, and 4 simultaneous interpreting. Exam taking techniques are discussed in this course. This course includes 20 hours of instruction.

 

 

  1. 40-HOUR MEDICAL INTERPRETING PROGRAM

COURSE OVERVIEW

This 3 month program is intended to provide the student with the medical terminology and consecutive and sight interpreting skills required to work as a certified medical interpreter. The following course must be successfully completed with a grade of 70% or better to receive a Certificate of Completion in the 40-Hour Medical Interpreting Program. Total charge for the program is $1,590.
